The car's at 80000 kms. Some problems developed during this repair which resulted in a new fly wheel, injector clogging and eventually with traces of water finding its way into the pistons. On startup, the timing chain jumped/slipped. So the repair was repeated only for the chain to jump on the second start up as well.
If you had warranty coverage the parts cost could be a great deal more since there's some bolts, hardware, and the lower timing chain cover that would need to be replaced too. I'd like to be as thorough as possible, so thanks for the heads up. Ok. In that case, you're in the $500-700 range plus labour.

it's common to replace the timing chain on some cars as a PM item. Old toyotas that use the 20R-22R often are spec'd to have the timing chain replaced at around 100k. Of course, on that motor, the TC is a 1 hour job. I'd certainly hope Audi designed the TC in the 3.0T for life, or at least the (expected) life of a clutch
All 2010 - 2023 Audi A4s have a timing chain and interference engine. From 2007 - 2008 all 4 cylinder A4s have timing belts while the V6's have chains. In 2008 the cabriolets (convertibles) have a timing belt while the sedans have a timing chain. From 1996 - 2006 all A4s have timing belts apart from the 3.2L V6's.

A local Audi shop (not official dealer) suggested I replace the timing belt. I trust the guy, but his recommendation is to do a significant amount of work - he said it's about 50 parts (replace all tensioners, serp belt, etc). His quote is $2200. The Audi dealer only wants $1400 but I suspect they're doing considerably less work.
